How to know if my aircon has Mould
Why mould loves Singapore air conditioners!
Mould needs moisture...
The annual averages for relative humidity in Singapore range throughout the day from a maximum of 96 percent to a minimum of 64 percent. Humidity levels are fairly steady in Singapore, year round. Overall, December is the city's most humid month.
Any space containing high moisture levels is at risk for mould. Most common moulds require a wet environment to thrive. While aircons cool the home, remove moisture from the air, circulate and filter the air, most air conditioners only run intermittently. This allows moisture and debris to accumulate in the air handler and ductwork, while dirt and mould spores from your home’s air are also collecting on the coil and dripping into the drain pan.
Now the mould spores have a home, food and moisture to grow and thrive.

How do I know if Mould is taking hold of my air conditioners?
Chances are you might not see any visible signs of mould to start with. The first sign you might have of a mouldy air conditioner is a musty or funky smell when it’s in operation. If you’ve eliminated all other potential suspects as the source of the smell, you need to turn your attention to your air conditioner. Once mould is established you might notice tell-tale black or grey circular marks (mould deposits) on the interior surfaces of your air conditioner. Worse still, you might see evidence of mould spreading to your walls and ceiling.

Signs of Mould in your home

Something Smells Funky
Mould has a distinctive musty smell. Most common mould will make the home smell old and unpleasant. You may notice the pungent nature of the smell increases as you run the air conditioner, particularly if mould spreads to the air ducts.

You Notice Visible Signs of Mold
The mold you find in an air conditioner often looks similar to the mold you find elsewhere in the home, such as an uncleaned shower or basement. The patchy black residue will require cleaning to remove permanently.

Recurring Respiratory Symptoms
If mould did not cause serious adverse health consequences, homeowners would not need to worry about its presence. However, mould can cause anything from mild irritation to serious respiratory illness requiring hospitalization.
